somewhat sketchy records show its existence since about 1014, but whatever its date, its relationship with London Bridge is key. Once the only route across the river London Bridge the bridge was constructed around the 990’s as a defence against the marauding Vikings.

Documented records from the 11th century show Southwark, The Borough to which Borough Market belongs, as the market town of repute – “On the other side of the river is a great market town called Southwark…” its only a small reference but its what the great market of today uses as a reference point upon which it pins its millennial celebrations.

For many years there were actually two market places around the vicinity of Borough the smaller of the two began on the grounds of the local Hospital, St Thomas’s on the southern end of London Bridge, in the thirteenth century the hospital relocated to its present location and the Corn Market went as well

For many of the historical trader the local authorities were a constant thorn in their attempts to trade and profit as quickly as possible and in 1270 the city actually forbade its citizens to use the market! it also banned traders from setting up there and trading. Until the early fifteenth century it was in constant battle with the authorities until Henry IV gave

City authorities “assay and assize of bread, wine, and ale and other victuals and of any other things belonging to the clerk of the market of the King’s household”. It was at this point Southwark’s market became, an extension of the City of London. This didn’t go down too well and further charters issued by the king brought Southwark and the City of London Closer together until 1550 when the Crown sold Southwark to the City of London for the princely sum of £1000, and the debate ended.
